PNP proposes mandatory CCTVs for all businesses
More cameras. Less crimes.
Thus think Philippine National Police, who proposed a mandatory installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) security systems in business establishments before being allowed to operate.
"This is just a small investment on the part of business operators that will eventually translate to higher returns as losses due to crime are diminished," PNP Director-General Nicanor Bartolome said.
"After all, it makes better business sense to invest on security than take the risk," Bartolome added.
The police chief explained widening the coverage of video security systems in all business establishments is a good measure that will help deter crimes.
In a public hearing at Senate, Bartolome revealed a 50 percent increase or 29,231 incidents of total crime volume in Metro Manila alone during the first semester of 2012.
There were only 18,672 crime incidents recorded during the same period last year, he added.
Bartolome disclosed to formally make this proposal to Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas in the next meeting of National Peace and Order Council (NPOC).
He promised to convince NPOC to adopt the measure for nationwide implementation.
PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. pointed out installation of CCTV security systems amplifies the certainty of arrest and punishment of offenders.
Cerbo noted that local government units, which require establishments to install CCTVs for business permits, are already experiencing improvements in peace and order situations.
